Everything a newb needs to know about Internet Relay Chat

Postby lazor on Thu May 01, 2008 3:33 pm

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. That's just a bit of trivia, I am not here to explain how or why IRC it works, I'm just telling you how to use it.

THE IRC CHANNEL FOR THIS CLAN IS #smashtitans on irc.gamesurge.net If you don't want to download a client Go here and when the chat loads, type /join #smashtitans

First off, commands. These commands are an big part of IRC. I'll explain some of the more common ones here.
Commands are always after a forward slash(/) at the very beginning of a message.

Commands:
/server <insert>-Use this join a server. An IRC server is where channels are. A lot of servers allow channel creation by members. irc.gamesurge.net is the server we may use in the future.
/nick <insert>- This allows you to change your nickname.
/join #<insert>- This joins another channel. There will always be a pound sign before the channel name. If a channel does not exist, it will be created when you join.

/quit <insert>- You can use this to disconnect from IRC, or in the case of Chatzilla, close Chatzilla completely.

/authserv login <password> <username> Use this to log in to Gamesurge. I don't remember the command for registering right now, but you must be logged in to be AutoOP'd
/part- Use this to leave the channel you are in.

Now for some terminology:

OP: These are the admins of a channel. They can kick, ban, or change a variety of channel settings. These are indicated by a @ before their name. Example: @Bug^

channel:A chat room in IRC

Chanserv: This a bot all registered channels of Gamesurge have. It allows you to configure a variety of settings, and it means if no-one is in there, the chanserv will remain to make sure you do not lose ownerrship of the channel.

Scripts- Scripts are commands that you install into mIRC or other clients that'll make you do something automatically if the proper input is provided by a user in the channel.

For instance, if you were to use an 8ball script, a user would type something like:
<lazor>!8ball Am I awesome?
<userrunningscript>Yes

Modes
Here are a couple channel modes:

+M
Only OPs can speak.

+c No colors.

A couple of clients for you
I have used 2 IRC clients and links to download.

mIRC is probably the best IRC client out there. It has support for multiple server connections, scripts, and it much more, plus a simple interface.
You can download it here.

Chatzilla is an IRC addon for Mozilla Firefox. It has less functionality than mIRC, but you don't have to dedicate a window to it, and it has several useful features such as auto connecting to servers when you open it up.
Download here. YOU MUST HAVE FIREFOX.
If you have any questions, ask them here. I'll be sure to update this guide if I get more information(I will).[b]

I'll try to get this up, as long as its approved.

Yes, I know it's not as graphically advanced as XAT, but it should provide us a better hold over events.
